On the western edge of Exmoor, and set in fourteen acres of its own gardens, pasture, woodland and rivers, Shorland Old Farm is the perfect place to find inspiration for a painting, or simply to relax. Enjoy the stunning views, explore the ancient, wooded lime quarry, with its rocky streams, abundant wildlife, and its own resident community of badgers, set up your easel in the airy studio, or just put your feet up in front of the wood-burning stove and unwind.
Something for everyone
Shorland Old Farm is where Exmoor begins. Wild moors, deep wooded valleys, tumbling rivers and dramatic coastal scenery make Exmoor the perfect location for artists and outdoor enthusiasts, offering excellent opportunities for painting and sketching, walking, cycling, horse riding, canoeing, or fishing.
For those with an interest in astronomy, Exmoor National Park was the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe, and the panoramic views are perfect for photographers, artists and nature lovers.
If a pretty pub or a cream tea is more your style, there are plenty of those to choose from too! We have a great pub, The Black Venus, here in Challacombe, and a village shop that sells a delicious range of home-baked goodies, and cream teas in the garden.
North Devon’s dramatic coastline is easily accessible, and very popular with keen surfers. A fifteen minute drive from Shorland Old Farm brings you to the famous seaside town of Lynmouth, or down to Heddon’s Mouth, owned by the National Trust. There are family beaches at Ilfracombe and Woolacombe. For more practical requirements, Barnstaple – ten miles away – offers comprehensive shopping and every other modern amenity. You can even hire bikes there and ride the popular Tarka Trail.
